Featured Kitchen

Main Impetus
Several of the existing cabinet drawers were coming apart. The guides no longer functioned properly and the drawers would fall out.
Project Objectives
Improve the look. Update with well-made cabinetry. Encourage guests to remain out of the main work areas. Increase work space. Increase storage.

The kitchen’s style went from partial-overlay oak to full-overlay cherry. The clients chose an engineered wood veneer product to achieve an upscale look at a fraction of the cost. The doors feature a recessed center panel accented by molding detail between the center panel and the stiles and rails. Added lighting, including decorative pendants and under-cabinet lights, also improves the look and feel of the space.

The engineered wood cabinetry is dimensionally stable, meaning that unlike a true-wood product, it will not shrink and swell with changes in temperature and humidity. The wood-dovetailed drawers are fully accessible featuring full-extension under-mount guides that are "slam-proof." The door hinges adjust 6-ways for proper fit. The chosen cabinetry comes with a hundred year warranty.

The floor plan helps to separate the work area from the guests’ "hang-out" area in several ways. The second level seating on the peninsula visually and physically separates the guests’ area from the cooking area. The island creates a visual interference suggesting that guests stay on one side. At the same time, the island also creates a secondary work station.

The built-in microwave is a safer choice than the microwave above the range, and separating the oven from the cooktop allows for two cooks, one working with either appliance. Furthermore, while at the cooktop, the homeowner can now speak with family and guests who are seated at the peninsula. Spice storage is easily at hand on either side of the cooktop.

For these clients, the larger layout means more cabinetry and better storage. Features such as the shelf-mounted lazy-susans, pantry cabinet, wine cubby, and pull-outs helped to further increase the efficiency of the space.
